A matter of the heart.

A sweet friend of mine just lost someone close to her heart recently. I promised her a post so here is the story.

First of all, I don't like sugar gliders. I don't hate them, I just don't like them. Why? They pee and even poop on me, and they make weird sounds.   But then I met Amy's second child, Nutmeg. To me, she's a darling. I knew we can get along well the first time I met her. She's different from Lola, Amy's first suggie. Although she peed and pooped on me, I don't mind. I am like that. I can just like something or someone, for no apparent reason. I went on playing with Nutmeg. Me and Jalwa called her Pala though. Malay for Nutmeg. I always prefer male than female, so for me to like Pala is definitely something new. Haha. I went on playing with Pala during the sleepover at Amy's. We bond.

Me playing with Pala a.k.a Nutmeg.

Then came the dreadful morning. Amy said Pala looked sick. She was hanging upside down at the cage, which is normal for a sugar glider, except that Pala was rocking back and forth and breathing heavily. "Constipation kot," guessed Amy.

Amy's guess turned out to be only one-third right.

"She's having breathing difficulty most likely due to pneumonia, so I'm giving her antibiotics. Her airway is completely blocked, so she has to breathe through her mouth. That is probably why she was not eating."
The vet at the third clinic we went continued on with more bad news.
"There's something hard in her ab, which is also a possible cause of the breathing difficulty. I gave her a lubricant, if she can get the thing out then it should be okay. Lets just hope it is not a problem with her liver."
The vet further told Amy she had done everything that she can, and that Amy should be mentally prepared. That particular statement was like a thunderstrom. "Mentally prepared." I saw Amy tearing while hearing the news. Believe it or not, I almost cry too. Almost.

After the thunderstorm. Sad looking Amy with Nutmeg.

Both Jalwa and myself assured Amy that everything is going to be alright and that Pala is going to make it. We  turned out to be very bad fortune-tellers.

Pala died. I got a text from Amy that briefly explained the death, "Nutmeg died of a genetic organ failure, which is like how other animals and humans get. Heart disease. This cannot be detected early or medicated for small animals." Ah, a matter of the heart, I thought. I got a mixed feeling when I heard the news. This is one of the things I really hate. And fear. Losing loved ones. This is one of the reasons why I don't get too attached to things, animals, or people easily. Why I hold myself back. And why I am judged as heartless by some people.

I don't like things that don't last long. I don't think anyone does. Tapi as a muslim, kita perlu redha dengan ketentuanNya kan. Every cloud has a silver lining. :)

Oh if you are wondering, I still don't like suggies. Nutmeg may be the only exception. Haha.
